Documenting what deserves to last

Folioheir began in 2018 when two facilitators with backgrounds in archival writing and community education noticed something consistent in their work: people often had detailed knowledge of their own lives and families, but no organised place to keep it. Documents were scattered. Family stories existed only in conversation. Records sat in boxes with no clear structure.

The studio was set up as a response to that gap. The name refers to the folio — a bound document historically used to hold important papers — and the idea that each person is, in a sense, the heir to their own story. The early sessions ran from a small rented room on Jalan Tun Mustapha. Within two years, the studio had moved into its current premises at Block A, Suite 5-1, and had begun running regular cohort workshops in addition to one-on-one documentation sessions.

The Sabahan context has always been central to how Folioheir works. The region carries a particular richness of family backgrounds — indigenous communities, long-standing settler families, multi-generational traders — and the studio has built its facilitation methods with that variety in mind. Sessions are conducted in English, and the framework is flexible enough to accommodate oral traditions, mixed-language households, and complex family structures.

Today the studio runs three core offerings: the Personal Folio Workshop, the Heritage Documentation Block, and the Annual Folio Membership. Each is designed for a different stage of the documentation process, and all are led by experienced facilitators who understand that this kind of work sits at the intersection of personal history, practical organisation, and careful writing.
